Penny James is a violinist based in Glasgow & London. She studied violin with John Crawford at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and graduated in 2018. In 2016 she went on an Erasmus Exchange to Finland where she studied with Reijo Tunkkari and Kreeta-Maria Kentala, and has since studied with Clare Thompson and Joshua Fisher.
Penny is a versatile musician with many interests and enjoys a portfolio career which includes orchestral playing, chamber music and folk music. She is also a dedicated and passionate teacher who offers lessons in violin, piano, cello and theory of music for all levels, beginner to advanced. Penny currently leads the London City Philharmonic and is deputy leader of the Ernest Read Symphony Orchestra. She freelances in and around London and has played with many ensembles including the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra in Finland, the London Euphonia Orchestra, the London Incidental Orchestra, the Philharmonia Britannica and GoodenSemble. She has played under the batons of Sakari Oramo, Roy Goodman, Gerry Cornelius and Diego Masson to name but a few. Penny is also a violin tutor at the Hackney Youth Orchestra Trust and has also worked with organisations including Animate Orchestra, Stretto Music, Greenwich Music Hub, Music Maestros, The Future Music Group, Trinity Laban's Teenies Group and Boppin' Bunnies music classes for babies and toddlers.
